How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?

Hi,

My car is 01 Hyundai Sonata.

I recently had a car check up and the precision tune auto shop recommended me to get new ceramic brake pads and rotors and change the transmission oil, motor oil, brake fluid and the battery.

For those works, how much SHOULD it cost for me?, meaning what's the normal price range for the job?

They wanted $640. Do you think that cost makes sense?

I live in Northern California, near San Jose.

I'd appreciate your answers. Thank youHow much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?Parts cost is about $60 for pads, $150 for rotors, $20 for tranny fluid, $20 for oil/filter, $10 for brake fluid and $85 for battery prior to labor you already are at $350, so 4.5 hours to do the job seems very good. Now, if you need all this work I don't know, I suggest getting a second opinion and compare with the scheduled maintenance list for your car and follow that. Tranny fluid every 30K, oil/filter 5K, rest of items as needed. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?I would say that is on the high end.

I would say that the most expensive things they are hitting you for are the pad and rotors, and the battery. These auto shops have most consumers accustomed to paying high prices for brake jobs, when in fact they are cheap (strictly speaking about changing the pads and rotars, not the ABS system, etc...).

The battery I'm guessing shouldn't cost over $65. You could do that yourself.

I would try to find a shop that would do it for under $450. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?Well under $200 with quality parts if you do it your self. It's really easy stuff.

  • How often do rotors need to be changed?

I just got my front break pads and rotors changed Feb 23, 2009. How long before I need to change them again? How often do rotors need to be changed? You do not have to have the rotors turned every time you install pads. Have them turned only if you go to far and the pads get metal on metal and cut into the rotors, or if you are braking and get a bad shaking in the steering wheel meaning your rotors are out of round and need turning. Other wise you can go a long time if you catch the pads in time and replace them listen for the sensors to start squealing and replace immediately. I am driving a 91 GMC 1500 series pick-up and have never had to change the rotors have resurfaced them once. It is stamped on the rotor what they can be resurfaced to and still be safe. So really a lot depends on you.How often do rotors need to be changed?Typically, 36,000-40,000 miles. This depends on your driving habits, the environment you drive in, and the quality of the parts. Highway driving, of course, causes less brake wear. Do not go by mileage, or time alone. The only way to truly tell if pads or rotors need replacing is an inspection, or physically measuring the thickness of the items. If your brakes start making noise, or the car pulsates when you hit the pedal, take it in and have it checked out. A brake inspection is much cheaper than a full pad and rotor replacement. Another note depending on the amount of run-out or deviation in the face of the rotor, you can usually turn (true) rotors several times, just something to keep in mind for your next brake service.

Hope this helps. How often do rotors need to be changed?Depend on how much you drive and what type of driving you do. Stop and go in the city will wear the brakes out faster than on the highway. Ideally you should get a couple of years out of a set of pads and it depends on the rotors you have but they should be able to be turned and last for 3 brake pad changes. How often do rotors need to be changed? It depends on how you drive - mine go over 100K miles on the pads, rotors basically forever. Other people I know go through pads more than once per year, and rotors every other year. How often do rotors need to be changed? You did not state the year of your vehicle so it is impossible to give you a meaningful answer.

New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?

I have a 03 Saturn L200. After changing the front Brakes and Rotors went for a quick ride to see how they worked I immediatley was getting this rubbing sound. I am not sure if it is just that the brake pads need to wear a little with the new rotors or If we made a mistake or we were given the wrong parts but it is quite noisy and it is constant. I have driven roughly 10 miles since the new ones were put on. The Brakes work fine but its just when I am driving I am pretty sure the Brake pads ,because they are new a re rubbing against the rotors.

Anyone experience this or have any idea what the problem could be?New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?the only thing I can think of is the calipers are sticking a little and not pulling back far enough, just guessing.New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?Since there new wait a week or so they will grind down sometimes the factory's make them ever so slightly big. and they will rub. but they will grind down after a while.

it takes an average of 100 miles to wear in. give or take.New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly? They are supposed to be in constant contact, but quiet. If it's older your caliper could be sticking and misaligning the pads. I would take it apart and check things out. Make sure there's no crud stuck on the pads. Check the condition of the caliper slides. If they're pitted or not smooth it will wreak havoc. You shouldn't hear anything. A little squeal when applying brakes is normal when new pads heat up and glaze too quickly but sounds like something different in your case. Make sure a pad isn't in backwards.New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?well you need to make sure you were given the right pads. if theyre wrong and are thicker than the correct pads, theyll rub. it could be that your caliper is sticking. could be that the pads were not put on straight (level) so one corner of them is rubbing the rotor. there are so many possibilities, its tough to tell exactly. brake pads should NEVER need to %26quot;wear a little%26quot;. start by making sure you were given the right pads and rotors once you confirm that...mechanic? sorry.New front Brakes and Rotors, Why are they rubbing together constantly?I would jack up the car and re-check your work.Make sure the brake calipers are not sticking, and ALL the caliper and rotor hardware is properly installed (slider pins or wedges, anti rattle clips, caliper bolts, etc).Make sure the rotors are properly seated on the hubs also.

Once this is done the real fun begins, if your changing your hub like it states you can count on that being rusted 1000 times worse than the rotor. They dont put any type of anti-seize on them from the factory and their such a tight fit they usually rust into place. • How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?

i know i need my front brakepads changed in my 2002 mustang but does that mean that i need to change those rotors too? is there a way that you can tell? my mustang has 90000 miles on it and from what i know i never had the rotors replaced. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?Rotors are so cheap these days that you might as well replace them, they will give a nice smooth but firm feel in the brake pedal. 90000k IS WAY PAST DUE especially if you live in a city. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?well the miles says it all, you have gotten the life out of those rotors and if there warped, you can feel it in the pedal or a jerky motion when it stops, you might not be able to resurface them and then its time to changeHow do i know when i need my rotors replaced? If you havn't abused the rotors with worn pads meaning metal to metal and there are no groves on them you could replace only the pads. I believe there is a tollerance for the rotor thickness. do a search on rotor thickness. best of luckHow do i know when i need my rotors replaced? The only reason you would have to change the rotors would be because you let the brake pads wear down to the point of damaging them. I, too, drive a Mustang (albeit a '68) and my rotors are about 12 years old. I just had them checked to be sure, and they're fine. Regular maintenance pays off again.

If you can HEAR your brakes when you use them, then I'd definitely replace all. Best to be safe. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?First, do they look smooth? No ripples or grooves, just a nice smooth flat surface.

Second, you must measure the thicknesss of the rotor and check that against the specs. for that car. Some times it is cast into the rotor as a discard thicknes. A brake spec. book will also give a %26quot;Machine To%26quot; thickness minimum.

Finally, thickness variation and run out would be another reason. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced?Well if you know you need pads the odds are you need rotors ,with 90,000 on the car.The rotors they put on cars now are what you call throw aways,or what I like too call them as Ginsue'sJunk.Back in the day you could get them turned down but I bet if you go to your local auto parts there probably pretty cheap.30 or 40 bucks a peace.A good indicator is a pulsation in the break peddle meaning there warped. So even if you get them turned down thinner to clean them up they have a tendancy to warp again quicker due to friction. If you can even get them turned down due to grooving, how warped they are,and the allowed spec to turn them to there thinest.I dont even deal with it anymore.Alot of shops dont even mess with it. The older cars back in the day had really meaty rotors, and made of good steel, making it possible to get a turn down on them.I found it better just to change them under this circumstance.Good luck pretty easy job while you have the calipers off.How do i know when i need my rotors replaced? If the rotors cannot be turned they must be replaced. The criterion is determined by measuring the thickness. Too thin and they get too hot. It is also necessary to replace in the case of a crack.

BUT new rotors are always better. Get the prices and compare--deducting the cost of turning which the new ones won't need. You may have a little difficult seperating them from the hubs, but you'll manage. How do i know when i need my rotors replaced? You have to measure them. There are standards for brakes so they don't fade under high stopping speeds. Check the thickness (the throw out standard is stamped on the side of the rotor) and replace accordingly. If you buy new rotors, they would probably last another 90k miles and it would be money well spent.

If all else fails, use a wheel puller. You can rent one at a tool rental place for like $5.00.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if you do spray them be sure you allow several hrs for the spray to work its way in and soak the whole centre of the rotor back and front but be sure all the new rotors and pads are away from the work area, also be sure if you change the rotors to change the pads and to clean the new rotors with brake cleaner before installing , plus clean any parts you may have touched when installing the new brakes.

Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?

    Hi,

I just got front brake rotor changed for my toyota camry 96 and the service station charged me 260$ for that (labor =119 and part = 139). I wanted to know if that was overpriced? how much on an average a front brake (disk) rotor change would cost.

ThanksFront brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced? The price is not out of reason if they had to change your rotors.

Typical costs for brakes: $30-$40. Rotors typically cost $50-$75/per rotor and I'm assuming you replaced both of them.

Labor charge for the brake job should be 1-1.5 hrs. Again $119 is not out of line.

So I'd say no I think that would be typically what you would expect to pay for a brake job requiring that the rotors be changed.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced? It sure seems high.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?I would go on one of the auto parts stores websites like AutoZone.com, Advance Auto Parts, NAPA auto parts, PartsAmerica.com or any one of hundreds of websites selling %26quot;Toyota Auto Parts%26quot; (search Yahoo). Then fill in your car's year, make, model etc and check the cost of front brake rotors. Of course if the Toyota dealer did the brake job, the dealer parts cost will be higher by say 50%, but if you find they're charging 3 times as much compared to a name brand aftermarket rotor you price out, I'd take that price quote printout to the service manager and ask if they made a mistake on your parts charges. Also, you could go to any other Toyota dealer's parts counter and ask them how much it is for a brake rotor for your car.Front brake (disk) rotor change for camry 96 cost me 260$, was it overpriced?that price seems about right, I would hope they replaced both rotors or resurfaced one side and replaced the other though. and put new pads on. I would have charge ya 127.50 in labor, 58.22 for pads and resuraced the rotors would be included, if you had to have a rotor, then I would I guess they would run about 80.00 bucks.

How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?

    I have a 1999 Acura Integra.

I went to the shop and had the following done:

new brake fluid, changed air filter, front brake pads, rear brake pads, front rotors.

It was 185 parts+ 160 labor came out to be a total of $361.

Do you think it was a fair price? How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?THats fair for not doing it urself...If it was my car, it would of cost me 160, i do all that myself :)

But to do it yourself would require about 200 to 400 in tools and safety equipment. This pays for itself after a few years. How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?thats cheaper than dirt/in nj front pads are 125.cramic/discs are 60 ea and the rear pads are 115/plus fluid and 160 labor and 750 for air filterHow much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?Although the labor cost always kills ya, the cost of the parts you got sounds fair. Rotors can cost $50 each or more, pads are usually $20 or more and theres almost all of your cost and you still have the filter ($5) and fluid to account for. You could always go to www.autozone.com and put in your car make and model and then find the cost of the parts there. How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?Seems fair if the work is quality. Dirty job too.How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors? It all depends on what brands/quality parts he got you.

Assuming, he got you brand name parts at the lowest price (better than some cheap ebay brand at same price):

    Front rotor set around $80

    Brakes F and Rear: $100

Total 180 ish so thats a very good price.

For labor. Installing the front rotor and pads on each side takes about 30 minutes for total:

~1 hr on the front rotors/brake pads.

    ~45 minutes for rear pads

~20 minutes for bleeding and changing brake fluid.

    Total labor: about 2hr +

Verdict: Part fee was excellent. Labor fee was fair. You got good deal.

How often do i need to change rotors for my car?

I have a 2003 mercedes. today i took my car for brake service. i only have 33000 miles on my car. all i needed was front brake pads. so the service guy now tells me that i will need front and back rotors also which amounts to over 1 thousand dollars because they say my rotors are completely worn out. I drive mostly freeways and never really brake hard or anything? could it be true? How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Your first mistake was to take your car in for brake service.

First get your car out of there. At home, jack up your car, take each wheel off and inspect the rotors. They will be right there in front of your face. Inspect your brake pads too. They should have at least 1.5mm on each side left of %26quot;meat%26quot;. Replace them if they don't. They cost around $7.50 for each wheel.

Run your hand over the rotors. They should be smooth without grooves or a high lip on the outside. A minor lip is ok. The rotors may be ventilated (have holes in them), and that's ok.

If you have grooves or a high lip, the rotor needs to be turned (resurfaced). Remove the rotor after removing the brake caliper. It will pull straight off. Take the rotor to an autoparts store and they will turn the rotor for about $10. If you have 4 bad ones, that will cost you $40. If the rotor is particularly bad, sometimes the store will not resurface them. Or maybe you can't find a place to do it. Or maybe you want to save even more money.

Take the rotor home, jack up the entire drive end of your car with both wheels off the ground. Jack each side, insert a jackstand, and then do the other side.

Put the rotor back on the spindle and secure it with the lug nuts. Don't put the wheel on yet. Start the car, put it in drive, and let the drive rotors rotate (turn) in the air. Take a belt sander and resurface the rotors as they are spinning. Wala, you saved an additional $10 per wheel. If the rotor is not from a drive wheel or the non-drive rotor will not fit the drive spindle, then you can mount the rotor on some other rotary table (like a record player) or mechanism and use the belt sander.

Sorry, but if you pay $1000 for new rotors, I will personally come over there and slap you.How often do i need to change rotors for my car?does not sound right....why can't the rotors be turned? How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Get a second opinion, it doesn't sound right. How often do i need to change rotors for my car? That guy is tring to rip you off, at the most the rotors may need turned, Take it somewhere elseHow often do i need to change rotors for my car?hes ******* with you. No way you wore out rotors in 30k unless youre doing alot of heavy racing. usually they last 100k+ miles. You can get em turned if theyre badly rutted. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Rotors don't last nearly as long as they used to because they outlawed asbestos brake pads. Asbestos brake pads used to take the wear; the semi-metallic pads and ceramic pads today wear the rotor down more. It's not entirely unbelievable that they could need new rotors. Of course, rotors for most cars cost under $50 apiece, so check the parts stores to see if you can get cheaper replacement rotors.

Also, it's likely that, although the rotors may be worn out of spec, they will work fine if you just replace the pads....problem is, the mercedes dealer won't do it, because, if the rotors are out of spec, they would be liable if anything happened, plus they couldn't warranty it. So if you can do a brake job yourself (it's really not that difficult, if you have a repair manual) just put new brake pads on and don't even worry about the rotors. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Sound like these joker are taking you to the bank. At 33k it should be your first brake change and only require rotor to be turn to give new brakes pad a fresh surface to mate on. Also, at that low mileage there should be plenty of meat(metal) to allow them to turn the rotor.

I'm a cheap person so I take my chances and just place new pad on without turning the rotors. also, i put lots of brake lube on back of pad to keep them quiet. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?Have him give you a written estimate detailing every part he is going to change, and make sure he includes labor and hazardous waste removal, which he will have to charge you for, and then go get a second estimate like the other responders stated. After you get one and maybe for more proof a second estimate, contact the States Attorney for your state. This guy is definitely looking at making some quick money from you or someone. You can also look up the price of rotors by using www.advanceautoparts.com or any auto parts store. You can also contact the Mercedes dealer and see what they charge for the rotors. Most garages charge upwards of 50.00 per hour labor. I am unsure of your car, however most rotors can be changed in one hour per wheel, so figure at least 2 hours labor.

If your rotors wear out in 33,000 miles, you need to get a different vehicle. I have a 94 Ford truck that has been driven almost daily for over 3 years with my wife and I together running it over 65,000 miles and I still have not had to change the rotors. I have had the pads changed twice, but no rotors. How often do i need to change rotors for my car? There is no mileage recommendation on replacing rotors, when being serviced, they are measured with a micrometer for minimum thickness, if they are below this specification then they need to be replaced. On some domestic cars and trucks, the rotors are very thick in relation to the minimum spec and can be machined 2 or three times before replacing but I have found on Mercedes-Benz that this is not always true, and also they use a hard semi-metallic pad that wears rotors out even faster. If you are in doubt of the honesty of your mechanic, then a second opinion is helpful, and then you can ask him these questions: What is the minimum thickness? What are my rotors measuring? Can you show me? This will keep them honest. Also, if one side is worn and the other o.k., This can indicate other problems like calipers sticking or something.

How to change rear brakes\rotors on 2002 chevy trailblazer?

Well I changed the front with no problems and it has helped allot. But I still hear allot of squealing from the rear and even sounds like a pad or something is dragging. I took a quick look without taking the wheel off and it looks really similar to the front. Being a 4wd would this be the case? Anything special? I will see if the auto place has a manual on this vehicle, but I do not think so as I looked online and it stops at 2000.

Thanks againHow to change rear brakes\rotors on 2002 chevy trailblazer? The trailblazer is straight forward. It's the identical method like the front, with the exception that it used the inside hub of the rotor as the drum for the parking brake. Take off the 2 caliper bolts and slide the caliper off the rotor. Grab the rotor and slide it off. There is no bridge to remove. The caliper piston is reset by compressing it, like the fronts. If you are going to replace the pads, it would be a good idea to replace the park brake shoes and hold down hardware as well.

good luckAny good websites that teach you how to change drum brakes?using jack stands get both drums off. this is sometimes the hardest part. then do one side at a time so you can look at the other side to see how it goes when you can't remember. After the drums are off it is a 2 minute job on some cars, 2 hour on others. Brake spring tools are nice to have but not necessary. Check the hydraulic cylinders as they are prone to leaking when new shoes are installed. They are pushed back up into their bore where rust will be if the car is old and water has made it into the brake fluid. Do not try to get by without having the drums turned or replaced unless you really didn't care about the brakes anyway.Any good websites that teach you how to change drum brakes?drums are a pain in the ***...but they at the same time are simple its just a matter of remembering where the springs and adjusting the adjuster right. just remember how you took them off and youll be fine putting them back on..there isnt really a universal way to take them off because all drum setups are different...just take a picture when you take the drum off so you can see how they went or do 1 side at a time and youll be able to see how the other side wentAny good websites that teach you how to change drum brakes?SAME IDEA AS FRONT. JUST REMEMBER TO LEAVE E BRAKE OFF. There is an adjustment on the inside of the drum you acces through a hole on the side to loosen your shoes. Its pretty much a gear . I just use a screwdriver to turn it until it frees up the drums. sometimes ya gotta bang on drums to get them offAny good websites that teach you how to change drum brakes?Best to get a manual as there are specific needs for serviceing emergency barkes (attachec) and adkusting them that make them more complicated than disc brakes...and you may need some spring tools and an adjusting toolAny good websites that teach you how to change drum brakes?Been a while since i've done a drum but easy enough, just make sure the cylinder is not leaking when you put it back together.Any good websites that teach you how to change drum brakes?znet.com supported by autozone and alldata repiar servicesAny good websites that teach you how to change drum brakes? What kind of vehicle do you own? • How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport?

Im replacing the front rotors on my girlfriends jeep, and iv gotten the calipers off...now shouldnt the rotor slide right off the hub? or do i need to mess with the big bolt in the center of the rotor? You know the one thats got a pin in it?How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport?Nope, your going to need a BFH (big ------- hammer), and do some swinging. These rotors will almost break before you get them off, mine actually broke while removing them. They will %26quot;just slide off%26quot; after they are loosened from the hub, but be prepared to fight them all the way.

These rotors are hubless rotors, meaning they do not have a wheel bearing hub in them. They simply rest on the wheel bearing hub. The large nut at the center holds the axle in, not the rotor. How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport?no! just beat on the backside of it with a rubber hammer and it should come off. it might be stuck so keep beating. donot mess with that bolt, it has nothing to do with the rotor comming off!How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport? In addition to above answer, LIGHTLY spray penetrating oil at the junction of the rotor and the center hub. Do not take or touch the axle bolt!! Leave it a small while and it will come off with a LIGHT tap. Beating on it too hard can crack a Cast Iron rotor or warp it.

    Good Luck

DO NOT LISTEN TO RETIRED_US_NAVY_COMMAN.... The rotors are NOT part of the hub and bearing assembly!!How do you change rotors on a 1995 jeep cherokee sport?Remove the pin from the center of the hub nut in the center of the rotor. Remove the hub nut. The rotor should then slide right off. If not, use a soft face hammer, and tap each side from the back to loosen it, then slide it off. When reinstalling the rotors, don't forget to pack the bearings in the center of the rotor, with axle grease. Reinstall the hub nut, and tighten until snug, then reinstall the pin.

How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?

My front rotors are fine, but the pads are worn down to the point that

they squeak. I am wondering how you compress the pistons that put pressure on the pads to A. Get them off, and B the new pads are thicker, so you have to make room to get them back on somehow.

(I'm too cheap to have a brake job, and know I can do this myself for a lot less)How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?take the cap off the resivour take off the calipers leave the pad on the side with the piston get a large c clamp and screw it in they (the caliper pistons) dont move as easily as some would let you believe but a c-clamp is relativly inexpensive and it will workHow do you change the front disk pads on a car.?Make out you have broken down and call out the AA and they will do it for you.How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?An old tried an true method is to remove the cap to the master cylinder reservoir (where you add the brake fluid) and just press in on the calipers (the things that push on the brake pads) they should move in relatively easily. Be sure to firmly attach the reservoir cap when done. How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?My favorite tool for this job is a crowbar. Use the flat end and insert Between the caliper and the piston. Make sure you are pushing on the center of the piston and not on the rubber boot around the outer edge of the piston. Remove the cap from the master cylinder and place a clean dry rag over the opening to keep dirt and debris from falling in while it is open. gently apply pressure to the piston until it is fully seated. Replace the pads. Replace the cap on the master cylinder. Press the brake pedal firmly several times to fully seat the piston onto the pads. Replace the tires and wheels and you are done. How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?Just be sure to check your rotors for scoring (the squeel means you might be down to metal), in which case you need to have the rotors turned and a brake shop is your best bet. If you shop around someone will give you a deal. If you must do it yourself, make sure you have transpo in case the parts store gives you the wrong pads. Use good quality pads so they last a while. Use the lubricant they give you in the kit. Use a pry bar to compress the pistons and open the calipers and most important, have a couple of cold beers handy and a bud to chat with while you're wasting double the time it will take the shop to do the job. P.S. If you're married, don't let your wife watch. It will drive both of you crazy. How do you change the front disk pads on a car.?Just push the pistons in on Both front or both rear which ever side your doing, push them all the way in until they bottom, buy a caliper piston tool, I usually push them in with the old pad to avoid damaging anything.

If it's like a honda I wouldn't do it if I were you, but if its an american car it should be real easy, I would say just go down to the parts store buy New rotors and middle of the road pads, I have found if you put really cheap pads on car they don't last long. If the new rotors cost more than 35 $ I would concider getting them turned if they are not to thin. Only thing to remember is lube end of pads on slides don't lube face of pad make sure both slides that attach to caliper move freely , lube those to.

How to change front and back brake pads and rotors on a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0?

I need a link to a tutorial, or any inside knowledge that could be posted on a step by step process, hopefully with pictures on how to change these out. Everywhere I read is you need a special tool and that you should stay away from doing it yourself because of the difficulty, but i do not want to spend $800 on a brake job. So if anyone has ever done this please let me know what you recommend. I have a friend that is very mechanically inclined, and has changed brakes on every American made vehicle, so I am hoping this tutorial could help us both in installing these. How to change front and back brake pads and rotors on a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0?The front brakes are just like any other car. Two allen bolts holding the caliper on to the caliper bracket. Then two 18mm bolts holding the caliper bracket on.

The rear brakes will be difficult for you. You will need a special tool that screws the caliper piston back into the caliper. Besides that you need a thin 15mm wrench and a 13mm wrench to loosen the caliper. The bracket does not need to come off. You can sneak the rotor out.How to change front and back brake pads and rotors on a 2002 Volkswagen Jetta 2.0?I suggest a Robert Bentley Manual for your model.Especially if you're going to do more work on the car in the future. Maybe Amazon has them.

Its not at all difficult. Just some minor differences from USA cars. Years ago, my son and I changed the brakes on my 2000 GTI.

However, I strongly recommend Genuine VW parts. There is a difference.

  • I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..

to remove thee nut/srew that holds the rotor. I took everything off and all that is left is that nut/screw but the rotor keeps rotating and that makes it impossible to take it off. Will putting the front of the car on jack stands help as I am changing the front rotors and am working on one side at a time?I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..I dont think jack stands will lock the rotors in place while you try to loosen the rotor's mounting cap screws. Best way is to use an Impact wrench. If you don't have access to an impact wrench, try using a long screwdriver inserted in one of the vent holes in the rim of the rotor. The rotor will rotate until the protruding screwdriver wedges itself against the floor. First, however, be sure you have new cap screws to use when you re-assemble. 2nd. Do not tighten the cap screws more than 1/8 turn once the rotor is properly seated. Use anti-sieze paste on the threads of the cap screws. I do not recommend using a vice clamp on the surface of the soft iron rotors. The rotors can be easily warped, knicked or damaged.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..Maybe you should have loosened them with the calipers on. Someone could hold the brake pedal. Maybe try putting a vice, c-clamp or vice grips on the disc. It's possible that one side has left-hand threads too.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..If you are talking about that single hardened phillips black screw, make sure you get a couple of new ones. I use an impact-hammer wrench to get them off (the kind that actually uses a hammer - not air powered - less chance that it will slip out). They are different metal than the rotor so sometimes they seize up. The head is about the size of a dime, but the screw itself is only about 1/4%26quot; diameter.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..put the caliper and pads back on and use a vice-clamp to hold the rotor still.

and you will need an impact hammer to remove the bolts on the rotor.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..From the BMW service manual:

%26quot;REMOVING, RECONDITIONING AND INSTALLING BRAKE ROTORS

To remove the brake rotors, first remove the caliper and brake pads as described below...Unsing a hex wrench, remove the mounting screw from between two of the wheel bolt holes and pull the rotor off the hub...Use a soft faced mallet to free stuck rotor.

    CAUTION --

    Do not try to remove the rotor without first removing caliper assembly. EXCESSIVE FORCE MAY DAMAGE THE ROTOR OR THE WHEEL BEARING HOUSING.%26quot;

Some knucklehead using an impact wrench and not their brain is why none of my BMWs go to a mechanic. If the rotor is to be discarded, you can use water pump pliers to hold the rotor and use a solvent to loosen the nut. If you do this, make sure to clean the wheel bearing housing immediately afterwards to ensure you don't have to greese and repack.

The front of the car should be up on jack stands and level.

You should have the BMW Service manual in hand or at the very least the Bently book. Either is enourmously helpful - especially in situations like this.I am trying to change the brake rotors on my1992 bmw 325i, how do I stop the rotor from rotating when i want..Everyones answers will work - but since your that far along try placing two lug bolts in their holes and use a pry bar between them or something similar to hold the rotor in position.

or just use a impact wrench.

As for tools, a few shallow well half inch drive metric sockets, 12 mm. - 17mm. , a 1/2 drive ratchet wrench, and a large C- clamp or a Jorgensen - carpenters slider C clamp, jack stands, a hydraulic floor jack (safer than a bottle jack) is all you need.

#1. Slightly loosen all the wheels.

#2. get the vehicle up on jack stands

    #3. Remove front wheels.

#4. Remove brake caliper. 2 cap-screws are on the back side of the caliper bracket.

#5. Two cap screws need to be removed to release the caliper bracket from the wheel spindle.

#6. Rotors may need a tap on the back side to break them loose because of rust and corrosion.

#7. Using an old brake pad in front of the piston inside the caliper, position your clamping device behind the brake caliper and screw the clamp which forces the caliper piston back inside the bore.

#8. When replacing the rotors, paint on a small amount of Permatex Never Seize on the entire surface of the rotor where the lug holes meet the hub. The rotors will never stick again. If you plan on keeping your vehicle more than 3 yrs. Do not buy cheap off - shore brake rotors. They are often machined to minimum thickness, the cast iron is of poor quality, they rust and corrode quickly and they warp easily. Go for AC Delco, Wagner or EBC brake rotors. autopartswarehouse. com has Beck Arnley ceramic brake pads which include brake shims. Be careful what you choose for brake pads as most do not include the anti-rattle shims which add to the cost of your job.

#9.If your selection of ceramic pads does not include the shims there's another way to stop brake squeel. Buy a plastic bottle of CRC Brake Quiet at NAPA, Car quest, or Auto Zone. On the steel side of the front pads first, spread a .090 thickness of this high temp silicone covering 100% of the steel side. Let it dry for 20 minutes.

Slide the rotors back on and bolt up the caliper bracket.

Re-assemble the pads inside the caliper or sit them inside the caliper bracket and bolt the caliper in place.

Make sure the rotors will work with your car's ABS system if that's a consideration. Also, you need to wash the new rotors in hot soap and water thoroughly to remove the machining oils. The rotors should have a %26quot;non-directional%26quot; swirl finish you can apply yourself. Can anyone give me a walk through on how to change the front rotors on an 03 BMW 525i.?If this is your first time, I would suggest buying a Haynes manual. They have one specifically for your car and year. The manual will tell you step by step on what to do. You can find this manual at your local automotive store or check out the companies website.

How to change front rotors on 1995 honda acord?

Take the tire off. There are either two or four bolts holding the caliper on the rotor. Unbolt the caliper and swing up and out of the way. Be careful not to pinch the brake line. There is a small cap in the center of the hub. Remove the cap and you will see a large nut with a cotter key in the middle. Straighten out the key and use pliers to remove. After the key is removed then remove the large nut. That will allow you to remove the rotor. When you put the new rotor on don't forget to put the outside wheel bearing and the flat washer back on before replacing the nut and cotter key. Takes a little time but is not that hard to do. Good luck...

  • How hard would it be to change front/back rotors on 2002 explorer?

I had a car that had them pressured on and needed to have a certain machine to get them off. My current car's rotors just slide off with a little help from a hammer. Do the explorers rotors just slide off too?How hard would it be to change front/back rotors on 2002 explorer?Front rotors have the integral bearing race and removing the spindle nut is necessary.

Rears are tircky becuase you cannot use your Ebrake when working to remove the rears.....EBrake is located at the circumference of the hub assembly....the so rotor is a disc and a drum.....

Tap the rotor while turning and pulling, it should come off....take this time to check the Ebrake drum surface....if it needs turning, get both the disc surface and the drum surface done at the same time.

You should have rotors turned anytime you installed new pads anyway. It helps them last longer and gives you better braking. How hard would it be to change front/back rotors on 2002 explorer?I know the front have bearings so youll have to unscrew the nut thats under the tin cap. then it just slides off. the rear is probably the same. How to change front rotors and brake pads on 2000 Dodge Caravan?

Once you get the calipers off, the rotor should pull right off on that one I think. It's possible the caliper mounting bracket might prevent that, in which case that would have to be taken off too. If this is the first time they've ever been off, there may be some thin washer-like things on a couple of the studs that you can just break off and throw away. If you're putting brand new rotors on, use some brake cleaner and clean paper towels to wipe off the anti-rust coating that come on them before you put them on.

    Here's the rest for doing the pads;

Remove brake fluid from the master cylinder brake fluid reservoir until the reservoir is approximately 1 / 2 full. Discard the removed fluid.

Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle. Remove the front wheels.

    Remove or disconnect the following:

Front brake caliper guide pin bolts

Brake caliper by slowly sliding it up and off the adapter and brake rotor. Support the caliper out of the way with a strong piece of wire. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake hose or damage to the brake hose will result.

Compress the caliper piston into the bore using a C-clamp. Insert a suitable piece of wood between the C-clamp and caliper piston to protect the piston.

Outboard disc brake pad from the caliper by prying the brake pad retaining clip over the raised area on the caliper. Slide the brake pad down and off the caliper.

Inboard disc brake pad from the caliper by pulling the brake pad away from the caliper piston until the retaining clip on the pad is free from the caliper piston cavity

    To install:

Be sure the caliper piston has been completely retracted into the piston bore of the caliper assembly. This is required when installing the brake caliper equipped with new brake pads.

If equipped, remove the protective paper from the noise suppression gaskets on the new disc brake pads.

    Install or connect the following:

New inboard disc brake pad into the caliper piston by pressing the pad firmly into the cavity of the caliper piston. Be sure the new inboard brake pad is seated squarely against the face of the brake caliper piston.

Outboard disc brake pad by sliding it onto the caliper assembly

Brake caliper assembly over the brake rotor and onto the steering knuckle adapter

Caliper guide pin bolts and torque to: 35 ft. lbs. (47 Nm) on 2002-04 models or 26 ft. lbs. (35 Nm) on 2005 models

Apply the brake pedal several times until a firm pedal is obtained.

Check the fluid level in the master cylinder and add fluid as necessary. Road-test the vehicle.

    And here's a picture of the caliper, with names of all the parts;

It is your brakes a major safety item. I just don't want to see anyone get hurt because they don't know what they are doing. How to change front rotors and brake pads on 2000 Dodge Caravan?Brakes are extremely easy to do yourself. It's just barely more than jacking the car up and taking off a few bolts. If you don't disconnect the hose from the caliper you won't even have to bleed the brakes, not that it's that hard either though.

But, asking how to do it online isn't really a great option, it's just a few too many steps to accurately spell out, you certainly don't want to miss any of the steps. Go pick up a haynes manual at any repair shop, it'll be plenty thorough enough to do it yourself. If you've never done it before it'll probably take two hours. Once you've done it once you should be able to do it in 45 minutes.
